There are many ways that you can get involved as a volunteer working directly with members at Base Camp. It is our goal to provided a 1:1 volunteer to member ratio as much as possible, especially in our after school tutoring and literacy programs. Volunteer opportunities include assisting students with homework in our H.E.L.P. program, tutoring in our R.O.A.R. literacy program, teaching Bible lessons for Kids of Destiny and Solid Rock, and mentorship of young people in our recreation programs.
At Base Camp we believe that the ability to love a young person and a willingness to invest in their lives are the only requirements needed in order to get involved. For the protection of our members, completion of a volunteer application, a criminal background check and attendance at a volunteer orientation are required before volunteers may begin working with the kids. If you are interested in learning more about how you can get involved, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Jessica Torres is a sophomore at at Cornerstone University and has worked with us as a community work study employee for the past 2 years. She is involved in all of our programs and also faithfully transports kids to and from our current location on a daily basis. In her free time she enjoys hiking, camping and volunteering at community centers that work with kids.
She loves the time that she spends with our kids at Base Camp and has developed very strong relationships with many of the members. She feels like they have invested in her life as much as she has invested in theirs. One of her favorite memories of her time at Base Camp was when she came back after Christmas break this past year. It had been several weeks since she had seen the kids and when she walked in the door, they all ran up to her, gave her hugs and told her how much they had missed her. She loves that they care about her as much as she cares about them.
Jessica finds the time she spends volunteering at Base Camp to be both fun and rewarding. She says, "The kids are well behaved, fun and adorable. They love to spend time with the volunteers, and good role models are desperately needed for these kids."
Thank you, Jessica, for your selfless investment in the lives of our kids! We are blessed by all that you do to make a difference in their lives!
